The Aukey SK-M13 Bluetooth speaker up for review today is a small, compact and lightweight outdoor wireless speaker that has a 6 hour battery life, built-in microphone and a wireless 10m range in addition to its splash-proof and very user-friendly design.
1What’s in the Box
The SK-M13 comes in a standard brown box, same as the previous Aukey products we’ve reviewed. Once unboxed you’ll find the speaker itself with a hanging strap already attached, a USB charging cable, a 3.5mm audio cable, a reset pin, the Aukey SK-M13 manual and registration card.
The speaker itself has a cube shaped design with rounded corners, it measures 3.5 x 3.5 x 2.1 inches and weighs just under 8.7oz. The body of the speaker is made from ABS plastic with a layer of silicone wrapped around it, this rubbery material makes it easy to grip and contributes to its water resistant and shockproof design.
While standing upright, the function buttons are all on top of the speaker – these include the power on/off button, the speakerphone answer/end button, the volume up/next track button and the volume down/previous track button. On the left side there’s the USB charging port, AUX input port and a reset pin hole incase you need to set everything back to default settings.
There’s a grey speaker grille on the front on the speaker with the Aukey logo on the bottom while the back has an identical speaker mesh but without the logo. For added portability, Aukey have included a hanging strap on the top right corner – this can be used to hang it from a tree, tent or pretty much anything you want to hang it on.
3Connectivity and Audio
Like most other portable speakers of this price range, the Aukey SK-M13 Bluetooth speaker only has 2 connection options – these include Bluetooth v3.0 and a standard AUX input. Pairing the speaker to any mobile device only takes a few seconds, I had it up and running with my Samsung S6 in about 6 seconds from switching the speaker on.
Once switched on, the speaker goes into Bluetooth mode automatically – so you’ll just need to search for it from your mobile phone. You’ll only need to this once as the speaker will remember any device you’ve connected to in the past and automatically reconnect to it once they’re both turned on. The wireless range is only 10m but if you plan to use this fairly close to you or maybe in an adjoining room, 10m should be more than enough.
Audio quality – The Amazon description for the Aukey SK-M3 speaker describes the audio as “crystal clear highs, fresh mids, and heart pumping bass“.
The highs are very clear indeed there’s no doubt about that but the “fresh mids” part is a bit confusing, for me the mids were very smooth and very pleasing on the ears.
The bass really is good, far more than what I had expected from a speaker of this size – lay the speaker on its back and you can actually see it moving around slightly while it’s booming.
According to the manual, the SK-M13 has a 800mAh rechargeable battery that can provide up to 6 hours of continuous audio playback. Using Bluetooth streaming I was able to get 6 hours 14 minutes from a full charge at 80% volume. It took just over 4 hours to go from 0 to 100% charge – a bit long considering it’s just a 800mAh battery.
