The Aukey SK-M7 Bluetooth speaker up for review today is a premium looking device that features Bluetooth 4.1 CSR, a 2600mAh Li-ION battery that provides a more than usual playback time of up to 12 hours and 2x3w speaker drivers all packed into a portable speaker that costs under £15 (at time of review).
1What’s in the Box
The SK-M7 comes neatly and securely packaged in a similar brown cardboard box as the SK-M4 we’ve recently reviewed. Inside you’ll find the SK-M7 Bluetooth speaker, a 3.5mm audio cable, A USB charging cable, a carabiner to attach to the side of the speaker, a warranty card and the Aukey SK-M7 user manual.
2Aukey SK-M7 Design
The SK-M7 rocks the similar cylindrical look we’ve seen in a few other portable speakers but instead of the typical blocky look – it has a soft rounded look thanks to its curved edges and matt black finish.
The enclosure is made from a silicone material which gives the speaker and aesthetically pleasing matt finish that’s both pleasing to the eye and feels very sturdy. The skin can even be detached from the speaker, although I wouldn’t recommend this as it renders the function buttons on the top useless.
A fine aluminium speaker grille occupies the entire from section. Sitting on the top right are the speaker’s 4 function buttons, these include the call answer/call end button, the play/pause button and the volume up and volume down buttons – these also control track skipping.
To the rear of the SK-M7 you’ll find the power on/off switch, a line in port to receive audio from another device and a line out to send audio to another device. These do not have a protective cover so I wouldn’t recommend taking this portable speaker near water. Despite being one of the cheaper Aukey speaker models, the SK-M7 looks nor feels like a cheap wireless speaker.
3Aukey SK-M7 Audio
Audio quality is something that you can generally judge from the price of a speaker, at least that what I thought before I met the Aukey SK-M7 Bluetooth speaker. I must admit, I was pretty surprised by the overall volume this portable speaker could pump out – especially considering its size and price point.
The bass is very respectable and vocals were clear even at high volumes. For me, the sweet spot for this wireless speaker is around the 80% mark – at this level everything just sounds right.
Speakerphone testing – I’m not the type who generally uses a speakerphone unless it’s a shower speaker in which case I’d have no choice, I think it’s just weird speaking into a speaker but nevertheless during testing, the speakerphone function performed really well, my brother was able to hear everything I was saying without any audio degradation or background noises.
4Aukey SK-M7 Battery Life
Like most portable speakers, the SK-M7 Bluetooth speaker comes with a partial charge straight out the box and its 2600mAh LI-ION battery can yield a maximum playback time of up to 12 hours if it’s used at the 80% mark once you’ve fully charged it – charge time takes roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.
This might be the technical specs but during my own testing, I was able to get in excess of 13 hours at the same 80% volume level, I think the 12 hour battery life suggested by Aukey is just a safe minimum and it can go further very easily.
5Aukey SK-M7 Connectivity
The Aukey SK-M7 uses the latest Bluetooth 4.1 CSR chip which allows for extremely fast pairing to mobile phones and tablets regardless of their operating system. I’ve managed to connect my Samsung Galaxy S6 in about 4 seconds and my wife’s iPhone 6S and iPad paired pretty much instantly, wireless playback was excellent when used within the 10m range even from room to room.
In addition to Bluetooth, there’s a line in and a line out port at the back – the line in is where you’ll need to plug in MP3 players and older non Bluetooth enabled devices and the line out port can be used to connect another speaker or headphone. I was able to connect this speaker and its older brother the Aukey SK-M8 together using the line out port via the included 3.5mm cable without any problems.

7Aukey SK-M7 Verdict
If you’re after a cheap portable speaker that features the latest Bluetooth technology and a powerful audio listening experience in an affordable package, this Aukey SK-M7 Bluetooth speaker might be exactly what you’re looking for. Considering the price tag, you can even get 2 and use the line out port to connect them up for double the fun.
