The Creative Muvo 2 Bluetooth speaker up for review today is the latest offering to the portable speaker market from Creative Labs, this upgraded version of the highly acclaimed Muvo model boasts the latest Bluetooth version 4.2 for first class audio streaming and an IP66 waterproof rating.
Having reviewed and loved other Creative products like the Muvo mini and the Outlier headphones, I was pretty excited to get my hands on the Muvo 2 to see what the upgrade offers – and in all honesty it didn’t disappoint at all.
Creative Muvo 2 Unboxing
You can always differentiate a premium product from a budget product by the packaging that shows up on your doorstep. As with all Creative products, there’s no flimsy brown cardboard box – instead the Creative Muvo 2 Bluetooth speaker ships in a very sturdy hard-plastic display case. Inside there’s:
- The Creative Muvo 2 Bluetooth speaker
- A charging cable
- The Muvo 2 manual
- Warranty paperwork
Creative Muvo 2 Design
At first glance the shape of Muvo 2 bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor. The dimensions for this one are 7.5(L)x2.5(H)x1.5(D) inches, and according to my trusty pound shop scale it weighs just under 12 ounces.
From those specs it’s clear to see that portability definitely was taken into consideration when designing the Creative Muvo 2 speaker – not to mention its high IP66 waterproof and dustproof rating.
The main enclosure is made from a hard plastic material which gives the speaker a very sturdy look and feel, as soon as you take this out of the box you can tell it’s a premium product. The front panel is made up entirely of a fine aluminum speaker grille that’s just wide enough for you to see the speaker drivers inside.
There’s a total of 6 hexagonal shaped control buttons sitting on the top panel along with 2 LED display lights and a microphone for taking calls. From the left you’ll find the power button, Bluetooth pairing button/call answer button, mode selection button (M), volume down/previous track button, volume up/next track button and the play/pause button.
The Muvo 2’s input ports are all neatly tucked away behind a silicone flap on the back panel. These include a MicroSD slot, a Micro USB port for charging and other playback features (see connectivity section for more details) and a standard AUX input port. For added portability, the Muvo 2 also has a cutout on the left side panel which allows you to add a wrist strap or any similar type of hook.
Creative Muvo 2 Audio
The Muvo 2 has full range speaker drivers in addition to a passive bass radiator, it’s not the most eye popping specs around and yet the audio power and sound quality of this speaker is simply superb. The Muvo 2’s sound is rich, very bassy and crystal clean even at maximum volume.
The volume level on this speaker is unbelievable, it can easily provide music for a backyard get-together and if you want it louder there’s even an option to link up two of these speakers – essentially doubling the audio power.
Speakerphone – This is a feature I tend to skip in most of my speaker reviews, but being a mid priced speaker I think it’s worth giving it a go just for testing purposes. This worked straight out the box for me, just needed to press the Bluetooth button on top to answer calls – doesn’t get much easier than that.
According to my brother the quality was clear as day on his end, no echoing or background noises at all. I love the fact that the mic picks up my voice even when I’m not in direct contact with the speaker – overall very pleased with the speakerphone quality.
Creative Muvo 2 Connectivity
This is where the Muvo 2 really stands out from the competition, while similarly priced portable speakers only offer 2 standard means of playback (Bluetooth streaming and AUX input), this portable speaker offers 4. In addition to Bluetooth 4.2 (10m wireless range) and AUX, you can use:
USB Audio – This allows you to playback audio from your PC or laptop using the included USB cable, for this to work you’ll need to download the Creative Muvo 2 software from here. It will then install all the necessary files and drivers for the Muvo 2 to connect to your laptop or PC.
After this you’ll need to press the M button until the LED between the – and + buttons turn purple, now just set the Muvo 2 as your preferred speaker like the image above and you can then use your PC or laptop to play music on the Muvo 2.
MicroSD Playback – This feature allows you to play music from a MicroSD card using nothing but the Muvo 2’s built-in MP3 player.
You don’t need to connect a mobile phone or tablet, just plug it in the MicroSD card then click the M button until the LED above the – and + buttons turn yellow then click the play button (see specs table below for supported audio formats).
Creative Muvo 2 Battery Life
According to the Creative Muvo 2 manual, there’s a 2200mAh Lithium Ion battery which should give an average playback time of up 10 hours – but it doesn’t mention at what volume level. So, for my own testing purposes I ran this over the weekend at 70% and got 11 hours 27 minutes, not bad at all considering it took me just under 3 hours to go from flat to full charge.
One really neat feature of the Muvo 2 is the ability to spot check the battery level, just double press the M button and it will give you a status light indication of the battery level – very useful if you forgot to charge it and need to know if it will last while you’re out and about.
