Up for review today is the Creative Woof 3 mini Bluetooth speaker, this palm sized wireless speaker is actually a standalone music player that can playback high quality audio without the need of any mobile phone or tablet. Just load your favourite MP3 files to a MicroSD card and you’re good to go.
Creative has billed the Woof 3 Bluetooth speaker as an all in one music player that’s extremely portable and user friendly, and from what we’ve seen so far – there’s absolutely no reason to doubt them. Honestly, it doesn’t get much smaller than this.
CREATIVE WOOF 3 REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
Creative Woof 3 Design
The design of the Creative Woof 3 mini Bluetooth speaker is completely different from any of the other Creative speakers we’ve reviewed so far, instead of the common rectangular shape as with the Creative Muvo 2 we’ve recently reviewed – they’ve gone for a more unique design finishing with what I like to call the “tea cup” design.
As mentioned earlier in the review, the Woof 3 is extremely compact and lightweight. I’ve been reviewing portable speakers for quite a while now and this I can honestly say is one of the lightest and most compact speaker I’ve seen in a while. It measures in at 2.95 x 2.55 x 2.67 inches and weighs around 8.3 ounces which literally puts it in the palm sized category.
The enclosure of the Woof 3 comes in a two tone high gloss finish. As you can see from all the images above, I’m reviewing the blue version but it’s also available in gold, chrome and red. You can check out all the other colour variations here. Looking down from the top you’ll find a chrome speaker grill with a centered button, this is used to create your wireless connection and once connected you can use this to answer and end phone calls.
Sitting at the bottom right hand side are the 3 function buttons, these include the previous track/volume down button, the play/pause button and the next track/volume up button. These buttons can also be used if you’re using the built-in MP3 player instead of a mobile phone.
At the rear you’ll find all the Woof 3’s input ports, these include the USB charging port, the AUX port and the MicroSD slot. Sitting on its own at the base of the speaker is the power switch, this is the only niggle I have with the design of this speaker – I would have preferred it to be somewhere along the rear or possibly on top to avoid having to flip it over everytime to switch it on or off.
Creative Woof 3 Audio Quality
First off let me just remind you that this is a mini Bluetooth speaker so there are limitations to what you should expect in terms of overall volume and bass levels. Under the hood there’s a single 45-mm driver which in my opinion does a fantastic job for a speaker of this size, audio clarity in particular is worth a special mention. Regardless of volume level, the Woof 3 remains crisp and clear without any hint of distortion.
In terms of bass, the Woof 3’s oversized bass radiator does provide a fair bit of rumble but as you would expect from a speaker of this size – there isn’t going to be any wall shaking or even table shaking effects for that matter.
Creative Woof 3 Connectivity
This is the one area where Creative always goes above and beyond everyone else. Despite being a budget Bluetooth speaker, the Creative Woof 3 still manages to pack a few extra tricks up its sleeve. The built-in MP3/FLAC player allows you to play music files stored on any MicroSD card (32GB max) so you won’t have to worry about draining your mobile phone battery when you’re out. You can find out more about FLAC or Free Lossless Audio Codec here.
If you prefer to stream music from your phone or tablet, the Woof 3 comes with a standard Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) connection – I know you might be thinking that’s a really old version but in all honesty I’ve had no problems at all with connectivity. It pairs up really fast and doesn’t stutter at all, and for those with music players from the stone age – you can also connect using the AUX port on the back.
Creative Woof 3 Battery Life
The battery testing phase of this Creative Woof 3 review was done in two different stages, the first test was done using the standard Bluetooth connection and I was able to get 5 hours 46 minutes at 70% volume. The second battery test was done using the built-in MP3 player alone and with this I was able to get 5 hours 54 minutes at the same 70% volume mark. They were both just a bit shy of the advertised 6 hours battery life but still 5 hours plus is more than adequate for a speaker that fits in your palm.

Creative Woof 3 Verdict
All in all, I think this is a fantastic little speaker. There’s not much I can fault in the Creative Woof 3 mini Bluetooth speaker, the built-in MP3 player is a great little feature that’s always going to make this mini Bluetooth speaker stand out from the rest. As you can guess from my review above, I would definitely recommend this mini Bluetooth speaker as a Christmas present for any music enthusiast.
