The KitSound Hive 2 Bluetooth speaker is the ideal choice for people who like their portable speakers to offer plenty of power. It’s compatible with a range of smartphones and tablets and rugged enough to take out and about. Most importantly, it delivers the kind of sound quality that music lovers crave in a reasonably priced package.
KitSound Hive 2 Unboxing
The Hive 2 comes neatly packaged in a see-through hard plastic rectangular container, in it you’ll find the speaker itself, a micro USB charging cable, a 3.5mm audio cable, a carry bag along with the setup and instructions manual.
A quick note – unboxing the KS hive 2 isn’t as straight forward as most speakers, if you would like to keep the packaging for future use then you’ll need to slightly raise the box where the hard plastic ends and look for the strip of clear tape holding the cover in place, cut this all the way around and you’ll get to the speaker without damaging the box.
KitSound Hive 2 Design
With a stylish honeycomb design, the KitSound Hive 2 Bluetooth speaker looks smart and comes in a choice of different colours to suit your taste or mood. You can choose a funky pink, yellow or purple, or opt for a more conservative black or white. It’s not all about looks though, the design also ensures the device is strong enough to protect it against life’s everyday knocks.
There are four buttons on the top allowing you to control playback and Bluetooth connectivity as well as turn the device on and off. Hidden away at the back are the microUSB charging port and a 3.5mm audio jack for auxiliary input from a computer or MP3 player.
KitSound Hive 2 Sound
Of course you don’t buy a speaker just for its looks, so what does the Hive 2 have to offer in the sound department? Inside are two 45mm diameter speakers each with 6 watts of output along with a digital amplifier.
There’s also a passive radiator to provide improved bass response and ensure that the unit delivers balanced, distortion free output even at higher volume levels. For such a relatively small speaker it delivers impressive sound quality even at higher volumes – this really is a device designed by and aimed at music lovers.
KitSound Hive 2 Connectivity
The Hive 2 uses the latest Bluetooth 3.0 technology which offers improved stereo streaming compared with the old Bluetooth 2.1 standard. It also features NFC (Near Field Communication) which means that you can use one-touch pairing with the latest smartphones to connect in a flash – no scanning for devices or entering pairing codes anymore.
In addition to its improved streaming capabilities, the Hive 2 uses less power too – so you can expect to get up to 12 hours of playback from a full charge of the 2,000 mAh battery.
KitSound Hive 2 Battery Test
Battery life on the Hive 2 was a bit better than the manufacturer’s specification; I was able to get just over 12 1/2 hours from a full charge while using a Bluetooth only connection and volume set to 70%. It’s always nice when you get more than you bargain for – even if it’s a few extra minutes. As expected, using a cabled connection I was able to get a bit more, just under 13 hours to be exact.
Tip – if you want to extend the battery life of this or any other wireless speaker, try using the 3.5mm cable instead of Bluetooth. This will conserve power on the speaker as well as your mobile device.
KitSound Hive 2 Main Features
Hands free functionality – You don’t need to worry about phone calls interrupting your listening. The Hive 2 has built-in call handling and a microphone so you can use it to talk hands-free to callers then go back to your music.
NFC functionality – The Hive 2 offers quick and hassle free connectivity via its NFC option, just place your NFC enabled device against the NFC label on the speaker and wait for it to connect, no need to scan for devices and then sync anymore.
12W audio output – Two powerful 45mm drivers deliver a maximum output of 12watts along with a passive bass radiator for a truly immersive experience you can hear and feel.
12 hours playback – The built in 2000mAh Li-ion battery can provide up to 12 hours of continuous audio playback, this is of course dependent on how loud you set the speaker and the connection type you use.
Micro USB charging – Charging the Hive 2 does not require a dedicated charger like some other Bluetooth speakers on the market, just plug in a regular mobile phone micro USB charger to the speaker and that’s it.
